The right and duty to vote

Although it is always said that Chile is a democratic country, it is necessary to point out that the current "democracies" are far from the original meaning and practice of the concept, which makes it practically impossible to achieve full democracy today. Rather, what governs Chile and other countries is a representative government which is characterized by the power of the citizens to elect, as its name indicates, their representatives. And how is this carried out? Well, through the popular vote, a fundamental pillar in these types of governments. The action of voting, also known as suffrage, is a mechanism and political right that citizens have and that allows them to actively participate in political decision making within a State. This right is extremely important for a society that calls itself democratic, so it is everyone's duty to take care of it and enforce it, since, besides being a right, this act represents your voice, your opinion in the society in which you live. Unfortunately, there was a very dark period in our country in which this right was annulled, and everyone's opinions were silenced, something very terrible that I hope will not happen again. But this itself should teach us to value the right that we literally have in our hands, we fought so hard to have it back that now it is the duty of each one to assert it in every instance that we can so that something like Pinochet's dictatorship, in which democracy was sadly demolished, never happens again. Thus, we must take this as a fundamental duty in our lives, and we must do it well. That is why it is so important to be informed about what is happening in your country, city, commune, town, etc, places where you can assert this right. This should also serve as an example for future generations, to whom we must instill the immense value of the democratic vote.

  1. Hi Matías. Your comments I consider strong and sad. I agree with your opinion because these horrible acts are abominable and never should repeat.

  2. I agree with your thoughts about this topic, Matías. It was really difficult to recover the chilean right to vote, to understimate it now, literally there were people who died to regain it.
